Invisibility, not absence.

Post by sakib60 »

This is the title of my contribution to the whitepaper "Tech & Digital Woman Power," published by Madrid School of Marketing. In it, a group of 15 women from the world of digital innovation present our conclusions on the role of women in digital transformation . In it, I outline the challenges women face in the technological environment and offer concrete proposals to enhance their presence and visibility. Here's the content of the chapter; you can download the full whitepaper here .

“Not a single woman”: that was one of the whatsapp number list main headlines at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the largest in the sector, in its latest edition, from January 9 to 12. Not a single woman in the official conference program. Zero. The criticism began shortly before the official start of the event and served to highlight, once again, the inexplicable invisibility of women in the technological and digital transformation environment.

Because yes, it's true that the percentage of women working in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (known as STEM) is lower. In Spain, only 28.85% of professionals in high- and medium-high-tech sectors are women , according to the Women's Institute, and only one in four people enrolled in engineering are women (even though in the 2017 university entrance exam, women obtained the highest grades in 14 of the 17 autonomous communities).

This isn't just a Spanish problem: in the United States, barely 35% of STEM graduates are women, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. Nor is it an issue confined to a single sector: the gender gap is transversal and, contrary to expectations, is actually increasing: according to the latest "Global Gender Gap Report 2017" from the Davos World Forum, the gender gap in all four variables (educational attainment, health, economic opportunities, and political empowerment) has grown for the first time in a decade last year.
