A backlink placed somewhere in the text where it doesn't make sense will not bring any traffic value, nor will it ever make sense to the reader or Google.

Your homepage backlink must be indexed to provide organic benefits.
If it isn't, it could be a sign that the linking site may be under a Google penalty (or has been ebay database demoted), which is something you don't want to affect your own site.

"I think when it comes to linking, it's important to evaluate whether your link looks legitimate or not. I don't think backlinks on homepages are common unless your industry requires it."
