How to Create a Negative Keyword List with Semrush

Post by ahbappy250 »

In a perfect world, we could all just rely on exact match keywords. In reality, most of us also need to use broad and phrase match keywords to drive more traffic to our website.

The downside? We are constantly competing with too many competitor campaigns at the same time. Many of the campaigns we are competing with are for websites that have nothing in common with ours.

That's why the key to a highly targeted campaign is to db center.uk choose what we're not interested in. This is where negative keywords, or negative match, make the difference.

What are negative keywords?
A negative keyword, also known as a negative match, is a query that will not trigger your ad. In other words, your ads will not be shown to people who search for that particular combination of words and phrases.

Negative keywords are useful for increasing the relevance of your campaign. For example, if you are running a campaign advertising kids’ climbing gear, you will most likely choose to bid on search queries like climbing gear or climbing equipment.

These are very broad terms, which means that if someone searches for combinations like tree climbing equipment or adult climbing equipment, your ad will go up in the auction and be shown to everyone.

However, the user who searches for adult climbing equipment has no interest in children's products. Someone who searches for tree climbing tools is equally irrelevant to you, as you offer rock climbing equipment.

Showing yourself to these users is a waste of your advertising budget because these are people who will most likely ignore your ad and decrease your CTR, or click on it but not buy anything because you don't offer what they are looking for.

By adding “adult” and “tree” as negative keywords, you are telling Google Ads that your ad should not appear for these types of queries.
