The biography of Muhammad is shrouded in legend and inaccuracies. According to historians, he was born in Mecca in 575 to a humble family of the Quraysh Arab tribe, one of the most important in the region of Hejaz, west of present-day Saudi Arabia.

Orphaned at the age of six, he was adopted first by his grandfather and then by his uncle Abu Talib. He later married his first wife, Khadijah, a well-off widow with whom he had six children, two boys and four girls.

Muhammad was illiterate. He was a shepherd and merchant during his youth, a profession that allowed him to gain a deep understanding of the traditions of Christianity and Judaism, the two monotheistic religions – which worship one god – that coexisted at that time and that influenced the emergence and expansion of Islam.

He received the revelation from Allah when he was 40 years old. While he was meditating in the cave of Hira, on the outskirts of Mecca, the archangel Gabriel appeared to him to announce that Allah italy email list was the only God and that he would be his messenger. He also gave him 6,232 sacred verses that he was to spread in order to save mankind from hell. These verses became the Quran.

The Hegira marks the beginning of the Muslim calendar
Muhammad decided to preach the new faith, encouraged by his family. Little by little he gained followers among the lower classes, but he earned the enmity of some local tribes. His monotheistic discourse was a threat to their interests.

The death of his uncle and his wife, as well as the persecution of those who did not agree with his ideas, caused him to emigrate to present-day Medina. This event is known as the Hegira and marks the beginning of the Muslim calendar.
