A recent photo of a Kansas State student’s selfie has caused a lot of uproar Thursday over what some are calling a “racist” photo. Around 9:00 A.M. on Thursday, @JustDesmund tweeted a photo that showed two college-aged girls with what appears to be a black-colored face-mask on. They were showing the West Coast gang sign, with the caption “Feels good to finally be a nigga.”
Since the photo has published, many people have sent threatening messages to Shoemaker via Facebook. On top of that, she has been expelled from Zeta Tau Alpha sorority at K-State. The VP of Student Life and Dean of Students at Kansas State responded to the photo in a letter, saying “there is no place for racism at our university.”
The real question is: was it really racist?
Sure, people can get a sense of racism in this, but I highly doubt these were her intentions when posting it on her Snapchat story. As a society, we have become way too politically correct. We have to watch our steps with everything we do or we will be grilled as a racist, homophobic, or a bigot.
There are many ways which we can disprove this as being racist. First off, let’s look at the movie White Chicks. These are two black cops in the movie that go undercover as white chicks. Nobody was screaming racism over this movie. Is it a double standard that black people can dress up as whites, but whites can’t do the same? Or has our society become so asia mobile number list politically correct that we can’t even have fun and dress up as something we’re not? I’ll let you decide.
Secondly, some may argue that her use of the “N” word was racist. Although I don’t condone using this myself, in today’s society a lot of the children are growing up thinking that it’s not that big of a deal to say it as long as you use “a” at the end instead of “er.” We grow up assuming it’s not a big deal because popular rappers use the derogatory term in every song. You can’t sing along to the rap song without saying it.
Last but not least, if Paige Shoemaker is really racist, then why does she have a picture with her and her friends in her cover photo that includes an African-American man. Last time I checked, racist people aren’t friends with people that aren’t the same race as them. For those of you who say that it’s just one photo and that doesn’t mean anything, feel free to go through her photos and look for yourself that she definitely has multiple black friends.
In all reality, this whole thing was blown way out of proportion by people who are looking for racism where it does not exist. One controversial photo making its rounds on the internet does not make a racist in my book.
